Castle Howard is just 15 miles North East of York and is easily accessible from the A64 which connects Leeds, York and the Yorkshire Coast.

Important information for coaches and wide vehicles

Coaches and wide vehicles travelling to Castle Howard from York will need to take alternative routes to avoid the narrow gateways measuring 2.6m x 3.43m (8’ 6” wide x 11’ 3” high).

A64 Eastbound: Go past the brown Castle Howard sign and continue into Malton. As you approach the town centre, just before the Talbot Hotel, take a sharp left into Castle Howard Road, signed Castle Howard and Coneysthorpe.

A64 Westbound: Exit the A64 at the Malton/Pickering roundabout. Take the left turn into Malton/Old Malton (ignore the brown sign directing you back onto the A64), and continue into the town centre. At the traffic lights go straight over, and after the Talbot Hotel turn right into Castle Howard Road, signed Castle Howard and Coneysthorpe.

By car

From the North - From the A1 take the A61 to Thirsk then the A170 to Helmsley. Before Helmsley turn right onto the B1257 and follow the brown signs. Please be aware this route includes Sutton Bank which is unsuitable for caravans. If you are towing, please continue down the A19 and follow the signs for the alternative route. 

From the South - Take the A1M to Junction 44 and follow the A64 east to York. Continue on the A64 past York in the direction of Scarborough, and you will shortly pick up the brown signs for Castle Howard.

You can also take the scenic route, avoiding the A64 and taking in North Yorkshire countryside and villages.

Parking is free for those visiting our Courtyard, Garden Centre and the House and Gardens. There are occasions where parking charges are in place for certain events, but you will be advised this as part of the booking process. We have a hard-standing gravel car park and we also have a car park for Blue Badge holders.

By Bus

York to Castle Howard: A direct bus service, Route 81 runs from York to Castle Howard.

By Train

Malton is the nearest train station to Castle Howard and York is the closest major train station. Both stations have buses running directly to Castle Howard and taxis are also available from both stations:

Nearest Airports and Ferry Terminals

Our nearest airports are Leeds/Bradford and Newcastle as well as Manchester. Ferries from Europe dock nearby at Hull. All connect with York via bus or train, where you can continue you journey to Castle Howard.
